Supplies are the least glamorous purchase in the hobby and the one that protects everything else. A rookie card's grade is decided by edges, corners and surface — all three of which are damaged by handling and by storage, not by anything that happens in a pack.
The working kit is small: penny sleeves as the first layer against surface scratches, toploaders or one-touch magnetic holders for anything you intend to keep, semi-rigid holders for cards going to a grader (graders require them for submission — a toploader is not accepted), and a storage box that keeps the whole thing upright and away from light and humidity.
If you are holding a Stroud rookie you plan to submit, the sleeve-and-semi-rigid step happens before the card goes anywhere. Handling a raw card by its faces is the most common way collectors turn a gem-tier candidate into a 9.
