The grading tiers, company by company

The three major graders each run their own scale, but they map to the same idea — the closer to perfect, the scarcer and more valuable the slab. We describe the tiers generally; the live eBay buttons above surface the actual graded copies and their assigned grades:

• PSA — the market default for modern football, graded 1–10 with PSA 10 (“Gem Mint”) at the top and PSA 9 (“Mint”) just below. The 9-to-10 jump is the biggest single condition premium on a Stroud rookie. Usually the most liquid slab on resale.

• Donruss Optic and Panini Select — the other two core chromium rookies, both heavily graded.
