C.J. Stroud Rookie Card Checklist: Every 2023 Brand Explained
The complete brand-by-brand map of C.J. Stroud's 2023 rookie cards — Prizm, Select, Donruss Optic, Contenders, National Treasures and more. What each set is, where it sits on the ladder, and live eBay listings for every one.
C.J. Stroud’s rookie class is one of the deepest of any recent quarterback — a card for every budget, spread across a dozen 2023 Panini brands. That depth is great for collectors and confusing for newcomers. This checklist maps every major 2023 brand that carries a Stroud rookie, what each one is, and where it sits on the ladder, with live eBay listings so you can see the real cards for yourself.
We name the brands and card families generally and let the live eBay rails surface the actual card numbers, parallels and print runs — those move constantly, and eBay is the honest source of truth. We never quote fixed prices here; price your exact target against sold eBay comps.

How to read a Stroud rookie card
Every true Stroud rookie shares three markers:
- Year: 2023 — his draft-and-debut season. This is the only year that produces official NFL rookie cards.
- The “RC” shield — Panini’s rookie-card logo, printed on NFL-licensed base rookies.
- Texans uniform — NFL-licensed rookies show him in Houston red-and-navy, not an Ohio State or generic draft look.
Anything in a college uniform is a draft/collegiate issue (still collectible, but not a true rookie card) — we break that whole layer down in C.J. Stroud Ohio State & draft-pick cards. With that framework, here’s the brand-by-brand map.
The core chromium rookies
These three chromium (“Prizm-style,” shiny, colored-parallel) sets are the foundation of the Stroud rookie market and the first cards most collectors chase. Each one anchors its own ladder of colored and numbered parallels — the same rookie on scarcer stock.
Panini Prizm
The flagship. The Prizm base rookie is the single card most people picture when they hear “Stroud rookie,” and the Silver Prizm plus the deep rainbow of colored parallels drive the set. Full breakdown in our 2023 Panini Prizm set review.
Panini Select
The tiered chromium rookie — Concourse (#41), Premier Level (#183), Club Level (#289), Field Level (#338) and Suite Level (#438) give the set a built-in ladder, with die-cut and colored parallels at each rung. Numbers from the published 2023 Panini Select Football checklist. See the 2023 Panini Select set review.
Donruss Optic
The chromium home of Stroud’s Rated Rookie, and the third pillar alongside Prizm and Select. Holo-silver and colored parallels anchor the chase. See the 2023 Donruss Optic set review.
The autograph rookies
When you’re ready to move up from base cards, autographs are the next tier — and Stroud’s rookie-auto class is anchored by two flagship families.
Panini Contenders
Contenders is where most 2023 rookie QBs get their signature card — but Stroud has no Rookie Ticket autograph. Panini could not sign him (his autograph rights sat with Fanatics/Topps), so he appears as the non-autographed Season Ticket #40, plus Rookie Ticket Swatches #42 relics and about a dozen inserts. The Texans Rookie Ticket autos belong to Tank Dell (#127) and Will Anderson Jr. (#140) — all of that read off the published 2023 Panini Contenders Football checklist. See the 2023 Panini Contenders set review.
National Treasures
The super-premium capstone — but not for autographs. Stroud is not on the 2023 National Treasures Rookie Patch Autographs checklist (41 cards /99; the Texans RPAs are Will Anderson Jr. #194 and Tank Dell #201). What he does have is a deep run of licensed rookie relics: base #39 /99, Colossal Materials #24 /49, Framed Fabric #10 /49, Rookie Dual Materials #5 /99, NFL Shields #5 1/1. See the 2023 National Treasures set review and, before you buy anything sold as a patch auto, the RPA guide.
Secondary & specialty rookie brands
Beyond the core five, Stroud appears across Panini’s wider 2023 lineup. These fill out a rainbow build and often offer more affordable entry points:
- Donruss (the non-Optic paper base) — the classic Rated Rookie in paper form; a budget-friendly first rookie. See the 2023 Donruss Rated Rookie set review.
- Score — the value workhorse of the rookie class; inexpensive base rookies and inserts.
- Absolute, Phoenix, Certified, Chronicles — mid-tier brands with distinctive designs and inserts that broaden the parallel rainbow. Note that none of them carries a Stroud signature: Panini had his image rights, never his autograph rights, so every Panini “Stroud auto” listing is describing a relic or another player’s card. These four have no free published checklist we can reach, so confirm the card number off the card itself.
- Panini Prizm Draft Picks — a draft/collegiate issue (college look, typically no “RC” shield). Popular, but not a true NFL rookie card — buy it knowing what it is. Full breakdown in our guide to Stroud’s Ohio State & draft-pick cards.
We’ll build out dedicated reviews for these secondary families as the core cluster matures. In the meantime, the live eBay rail below covers every brand named on this page.
Don’t forget the inserts
The 2023 products above don’t just carry base rookies — they’re loaded with themed insert cards that trade in their own market entirely separate from the base-and-parallel ladder. Kaboom!, Color Blast and Z Stars are the names collectors hunt hardest, and the case-hit Downtown! has its own dedicated breakdown. If you’re building a Stroud collection rather than a single rookie run, budget for at least one insert chase.
Where each brand sits on the ladder
A quick mental model, cheapest to priciest tier (actual prices always via live eBay comps):
- Entry — Score and paper Donruss base rookies.
- Iconic base — Prizm, Optic and Select base rookies and their common parallels.
- Chase parallels — numbered and case-hit colored parallels across the chromium sets.
- Autographs — none from Panini. Certified Stroud signatures are Topps issues (2023 Topps Composite and Motif, 2024 Topps Chrome/Finest/Signature Class, and the licensed 2025 Topps Chrome BA-CS).
- Crown jewels — the licensed National Treasures relics (NFL Shields #5 is a true 1/1) and the Donruss Optic Downtown! #2 case hit.
Build your Stroud rookie run
Use the live eBay links below to see real listings for each brand right now, then price your target against sold comps — not asking prices. For anything with real value (autos, numbered parallels, RPAs), buy it graded (PSA or SGC): the slab authenticates a heavily-faked player and standardizes condition. Our graded rookie cards guide explains what a PSA 10, BGS 9.5 and SGC 10 each actually mean and when buying already-slabbed beats grading your own — and if you’re buying anything signed raw, read how to spot fake Stroud autographs first. Thinking of submitting a raw copy yourself? Check the grading ROI calculator and pre-screen the corners with the card centering tool.
Keep going: the rookie cards money page ranks the chase, the autographs & top cards list covers the signed tier, what’s a Stroud card worth frames the value ladder, and the C.J. Stroud player hub ties it all together.
