2023 Panini Contenders: C.J. Stroud Has No Rookie Ticket Autograph

Every 2023 rookie QB class is defined by its Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph — except C.J. Stroud, who does not have one. Here is what he actually has in 2023 Panini Contenders (Season Ticket #40, Rookie Ticket Swatches #42 relics, a dozen inserts), why the auto is missing, and where his real signatures are.

For most rookie quarterback classes, the Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph is the defining card. For C.J. Stroud, it does not exist.

Stroud is not in the 2023 Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph checklist. The Houston Texans Rookie Ticket RPS autographs in that product — a 42-card run — belong to Tank Dell (#127) and Will Anderson Jr. (#140); the plain Rookie Tickets go to Xavier Hutchinson (#149) and Juice Scruggs (#272). Stroud — the No. 2 overall pick and the Offensive Rookie of the Year — is the one 2023 Texans rookie without a signature in the set.

Why the auto is missing

Panini held the NFL and NFLPA licence in 2023, which covered Stroud’s image and jersey material. It did not cover his signature: an autograph card needs a separate per-player signing contract, and Stroud’s went to Fanatics/Topps.

That is why Panini slotted him into the Season Ticket base checklist — the non-autographed base run — rather than the Rookie Ticket. The same absence repeats across every 2023 Panini NFL product: National Treasures, Contenders Optic, Donruss Optic, Select, Zenith, Flawless, Panini One, Limited, Impeccable, Spectra, Illusions and Obsidian all carry Stroud cards, and not one carries a Stroud autograph.

The trap: “Rookie Ticket” on a card that is not an autograph

The Rookie Ticket Swatches #42 relic carries the words Rookie Ticket on its face. It is the single most common card sold as a “Stroud Contenders rookie auto,” and it is not one — it is a swatch card with no ink.

Three rules before you bid on anything described as a Stroud Contenders auto:

  1. See the signature in the photo. Not in the title, not in a certificate — on the card.
  2. A “Rookie Ticket” wordmark is a design, not a guarantee. Swatch cards use the same design.
  3. Championship Ticket and Cracked Ice are parallels of an autograph Stroud does not have. Any such listing is mislabelled.

Where Stroud’s real certified autographs live

All Topps, and mostly unlicensed:

  • 2023 Topps Composite Football — Topps’ return to pro football; unlicensed, airbrushed, no NFL team or league logos. Stroud is a headline rookie signer.
  • 2023 Topps Motif Football — high-end, six hard-signed cards per Hobby box; also unlicensed. Stroud base #96 RC plus multiple on-card autograph inserts.
  • 2024 Topps Chrome Football — unlicensed. Base Auto BA-CST, All-Etch Auto AEA-CJ.

The Season Ticket #40 is an affordable, liquid base rookie and a perfectly good card to own — just buy it as what it is. For the relics, match the exact card and read the swatch. For anything expensive, buy graded (PSA, BGS or SGC) and price against sold comps.
