The C.J. Stroud RPA: Why There Is No Licensed Rookie Patch Autograph

RPA is the most-searched abbreviation in C.J. Stroud’s market. It stands for Rookie Patch Autograph — one card carrying rookie-year status, a jersey swatch, and a signature.

For Stroud, that card does not exist in licensed form, and understanding why is the single most valuable thing a Stroud buyer can know.

The split that killed the card

Two different rights have to line up to make an RPA, and in 2023 they were held by two different companies.

• Panini held the exclusive NFL and NFLPA trading-card licence (2016 through the 2025 season). That covers his image, Texans marks, and NFL jersey material. It does not cover his signature.
• Fanatics/Topps held Stroud’s autograph rights. That covers the pen. In 2023 Topps had no NFL licence at all, so anything it printed was unlicensed — airbrushed images, no team or league logos, no NFL jersey swatches.

So Panini made Stroud patch cards with no ink, and Topps made Stroud ink with no patches and no NFL marks. Neither could make the card the market keeps searching for.

The evidence is on the checklists. The 2023 Panini National Treasures Football Rookie Patch Autographs run is 41 cards, /99 — the Houston Texans entries are Will Anderson Jr. #194 and Tank Dell #201, and Stroud is not on it. 2023 Panini Contenders tells the same story: the Rookie Ticket RPS autograph run (42 cards) gives Houston Tank Dell #127 and Will Anderson Jr. #140, while Stroud sits in the unsigned Season Ticket base at #40. The absence repeats in Contenders Optic, Donruss Optic, Select, Zenith, Flawless, Panini One, Limited, Impeccable, Spectra, Illusions and Obsidian: Stroud cards in all of them, zero Stroud signatures in any of them.

What actually gets sold as a “Stroud RPA”

Every one of these appears in live listings under that title:

• 2023 National Treasures patch relics. Colossal Materials #24 /49, Framed Fabric #10 /49, Franchise Treasures #6 /49, Heirlooms #3 /49, Rookie Dual Materials #5 /99, NFL Gear Trio/Quad Materials #1 /99, NFL Shields #5 1/1. Big, beautiful swatch windows. No signature.
• 2023 Contenders Rookie Ticket Swatches #42. The words Rookie Ticket are printed on the card. It is a relic. There is no Stroud Rookie Ticket autograph to go with it.
• A Topps Stroud patch autograph relabelled under a Panini brand name. Real signature, real swatch, real card — but a Topps issue (2023 Motif MRR-CS, 2023 Composite CPAH-CJS), and in 2023–24 an unlicensed one with no Texans marks. Worth buying on its own terms; not worth buying as a licensed National Treasures RPA.
• Another player’s RPA, or an unlicensed custom.

The rule: read the card image, not the title. If you cannot see ink on the card stock, it is not an autograph. If you can see ink and a Texans logo and a swatch on a 2023 card, something is wrong.

Where Stroud’s real certified autographs are

2025 Topps Chrome Football is the first NFL-licensed Topps product since 2015 — and therefore the only place a signed Stroud card carries Texans marks. His base card there is #119.

The nearest thing that does exist: an unlicensed rookie patch auto

This is the part collectors miss, and it is worth knowing before you buy. Topps did put Stroud’s signature and a swatch on the same rookie-year card — it just could not put a Texans logo next to them.

• 2023 Topps Motif carries Motif Rookie Relic Autograph Jerseys MRR-CS, plus Dual Patch MRRD-CS, Triple Patch MRRT-CS and Quad Patch MRRQ-CS. Rookie-year, hard-signed, patch windows: structurally an RPA in everything but the licence.
• 2023 Topps Composite adds Composite Patch Autographs CPAH-CJS / CPAV-CJS, Composite Jumbo Patch Autographs CJPAH-CS / CJPAV-CS, and Resurgence Patch Autographs RPA-CS (a 28-card, /149 run).

One warning on that last code: in Composite, RPA- stands for Resurgence Patch Autographs, not Rookie Patch Autograph — the subset also contains Dan Marino, Joe Montana and Troy Aikman. It is a prefix collision that feeds a lot of bad listing titles.

So the accurate statement is not “no Stroud patch autograph exists” — it is that no NFL-licensed one does. Every Stroud signature-plus-swatch card is a Topps issue with airbrushed uniforms and no team or league marks.

If you want the closest thing to an RPA

There isn’t a single card, so collectors usually build the pair:

1. A licensed 2023 Panini patch relic — the Texans-marked, rookie-year, memorabilia half. Colossal Materials #24 /49 or Rookie Dual Materials #5 /99 are the accessible picks; NFL Shields #5 is the 1/1.
2. A certified Topps autograph — the signature half. 2023 Composite or Motif for rookie-year ink; 2025 Topps Chrome BA-CS if you want the signature and the Texans logo on the same card.

Buying without getting hurt

1. Identify the card in writing before you bid — year, brand, product, card number, parallel, serial. If the listing cannot fill those in, you cannot comp it.
2. Buy graded for anything expensive. A slab from a grader that authenticates signatures settles both the ink and the condition. See the graded rookie cards page and the grading ROI calculator.
3. Never comp a relic against an autograph. They are different card classes with an enormous price gap, and the “RPA” keyword hides the difference.
4. Sold comps only, matched to the exact card.
5. Mind the stock. Thick memorabilia cards and dark premium borders punish rough handling; the card centering tool helps you judge a scan.

Where this sits in the Stroud collection

The chromium base rookies — Prizm, Optic (Rated Rookie #244), Select — are the liquid core, the paper Rated Rookie is the entry point, the Downtown case hit is the art piece, and the numbered parallel ladder is the scarcity game.
